So I’m going to do a little jumping around here and tell you all our engagement story. I know what was supposed to be next was the recap of the wedding ceremony, but I figured I started talking about the entire wedding weekend when I didn’t even talk about our engagement!
So, here goes! I wrote this a couple of days after our engagement and posted it on facebook, so you can read my excitement!
“Greg took me to dinner at Americas, the place where we had our first date. Dinner was amazing. We enjoyed wine. I had the corn-crusted red snapper and he had swordfish. I was enjoying just being with him and enjoying him. After dinner, he told me that we were going to the Hotel Zaza (right next to the Museum of Fine Arts) for dessert. He said he read reviews on their restaurant and it said it was one of the top ten restaurants of Houston.
We arrived and when we walked in, he said, “I hear that there’s a really good view of Hermann park from the top of the hotel. Want to go check it out?” I said, “Of course!” We went to the 11th floor. There were some Halloween parties going on so we weren’t really able to go look out the window to see the view. He looked at me and said, “Let’s have some fun. Do you trust me?” I said, “Of course.” He pulled out a kitchen rag and blindfolded me. He said, “Just hold onto me and come with me.” I was a little freaked out because I literally could not see anything. I was wearing really high heels so it was a little bit difficult to walk blindfolded. I eventually feel the wind blowing like we’re outside and then I hear water and music.
He leads me to wherever our spot is, and once we get there, he stars reading me the story of our relationship. He talks about a bunch of special times and reminisces. Once he gets through the story up until the present, he takes the blindfold off and I’m standing in front of this table with rose petals and candles. On the table was the collages and keepsakes that he had previously given to me to commemorate certain dates of our relationship (the day we first met, our first date, when we made it official, when we said I love you, and when he moved down to Houston). He says, “There’s one more gift I want to give you tonight. It’s the least creative but it’s the most important.” Next to the gifts are these little cards with really nice things written on them. I was to read each one and then turn them over. Once I turned all of them over, they spelt out “Me.” He told me that that was the final gift…. him. By this time, the wheels are turning. He said that there was a secret message in the gifts that I already possessed. He told me to look at the first letter of each one in chronological order. They spelled out the word “Marry.” Then, add that to the “Me” (the final gift) it equaled…. “MARRY ME.” He then got on one knee and asked me to marry him. Of course I said yes, while crying and kissing him. I was so surprised and happy! He then took me out to a balcony overlooking the fountains in front of the Sam Houston statue and put the ring on my finger. It was so picturesque and beautiful. It turns out he rented out a very beautiful poolside cabana with that balcony. It even had a chandelier! After all the emotion, Greg said he had another surprise for me.
He led me back down to the restaurant that we originally planned on going to. Sitting at a table was my entire family with a cake, balloon and champagne!! We celebrated together and had a fantastic time. Afterward, Greg said he had yet ANOTHER surprise for me. He said that he got a room for us there that night. He told me to wait outside the room for a few minutes. When I came in, he had rose petals all over the room, pictures of us all over the walls, and rose petals and floating candles in the bathtub, complete with a “will you marry me?” written on the toilet paper (inside joke that had me laughing really hard)! It was the most magical and special night of my life. I have never been so happy and so in love. I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with this incredible man. I am so lucky!!!”
