Skincare Sunday – Hyaluronic Acid

In today’s Skincare Sunday post, we are going to focus on an ingredient that you can find in many skincare items, particularly moisturizers. It’s called Hyaluronic Acid.

You probably have heard of it before, but maybe you’re not sure what it is or how to look for it. Hyaluronic acid is a natural acid found in skin, joints, and connective tissue. It is known to cushion and lubricate. When used for skin care, hyaluronic acid acts as a moisture magnet.

When you use hyaluronic acid, it absorbs all available moisture in the air and on your face and adheres it. It is said that hyaluronic acid can hold 1,000 times its weight in water, which is essential for all skin types, including oily skin. It is automatically assumed that if you have oily skin, you do not need moisture. Oh, the contrary. Your skin can most definitely be dehydrated and also oily. Does your skin ever feel lifeless, dull, and not plump? You need moisture. Drinking lots of water will help, but hyaluronic acid in your skincare products will help even more.

Those that use hyaluronic acid claim that it really plumps their skin and keeps it looking youthful and hydrated. I can most definitely attest to that. I have such weird skin – trying to fight aging, breakouts, oil, while all at the same time trying to stay hydrated. Some people take hyaluronic acid in capsule/supplement form. A lot of people take it for joint pain. I actually just finished taking it for about a month, and I haven’t noticed a huge difference in the plumpness of my skin, but maybe I need to up my dosage. I get better results topically.

Take a look at your products. Do you see an ingredient listed called “Sodium Hyauronate”? If so, you are already using a form of hyaluronic acid. If not, you may want to grab something. There are so many choices, and it will be overwhelming to start, so I’ll make it simple for you. I recommend a serum with 100% pure hyaluronic acid.

Sorry about how blurry that picture is, but that is the serum that I own. I got this specific one on amazon for under $15, and free shipping with prime (major bonus for me).

How do I use it? After washing my face, I keep it a little damp, and I use two pumps. It covers my face, neck, decollatage, and backs of my hands. On nights I’m using my Retin-A, I will not apply anything else, and wait for 30 minutes to apply my Retin-A. On other nights, I will immediately apply my moisturizer. I also use it every morning underneath my daytime moisturizer.

A hyaluronic acid serum isn’t necessary if you are getting it in another ingredient, although you want to make sure it’s not the last ingredient on the list. Bottom line, you need this in your skincare rotation, in some form or another!

Right now I am using the Skin MD or the Eclos. Really any basic moisturizer you like to use day/night should work fine!
