Caroline – 1 Month

And just like that, Caroline is one month old (well, as of yesterday). We moms say this all the time, but this month has certainly flown by and has been so joyful. I remember feeling time sort of stood still the first month of Kennedy’s life, but this has felt different. Being a mom of two is a huge blessing, but it certainly feels like the days go by faster.

This month has been about really finding how to get into a routine with two kids while I’m on maternity leave and will be home with the two of them a lot. That means school drop off, bath time, evening walks, etc. Kennedy started back at her preschool, and is attending 5 days a week from 9:30-1:30. It’s lovely being able to spend some alone time with Caroline.

Caroline is such a sweet and easy going child. I think sometimes you have no choice as the second child just to roll with it, even if your sister gets in your face and pokes at your eyes. Even though she is the second child, I definitely want her to have her own monthly photos.

So, here’s a little Caroline update.

  • At her 2-week appointment, she was 8 lb, 1 oz. I have no idea what she is now, but I know it’s bigger! Haha
  • Wearing newborn size clothes, some of which are tight. Starting to wear 0-3 months.
  • Newborn size diapers, about to transition to size 1s

  • Eating
  • Being worn in a baby carrier
  • Being swaddled real right (I have some blankets like these we used with Kennedy and we looooove them)
  • Wearing tons of hand-me-downs
  • Evening walks in the double stroller with her sister
  • Being held by her sissy
  • Mommy’s white noise iPhone app when she gets fussy or needs a little help going back to sleep
  • Baths (Quite the opposite of her sister!!!)

  • When mom eats dairy (Well, I am not entirely sure, but she has been getting overly gassy and fussy when I eat too much dairy. Since cutting it out drastically it has helped. I plan on adding it back little by little.)
  • Being undressed
  • The evening time. Like many newborns, she gets a bit fussy in the evenings. We actually started using a pacifier with her for these times (Kennedy never took one) and it seems to help. I am paranoid about her getting attached to a pacifier so I am trying to use it as sparingly as possible.

  • Breastfeeding is going great. As I mentioned in her birth story post, she latched on immediately and the rest has been history. I was blown away. That’s not to say I won’t have any issues later, but I am so happy this has been even easier than Kennedy.
  • I started pumping twice a day when she was about a week old and have already a nice freezer stash going on in the garage deep freezer. One of the things I was most stressed out about was being able to have enough pumped milk in reserve due to my unbelievably crazy schedule. Luckily we have been off to a great start with that, as well.

Great sleeper so far. She sleeps a lot during the day, like the typical newborn. In the evenings, she’ll go down for the evening around 9:45 and is up once for a feeding at 4:30. Typically she’ll go back to sleep til around 8:30. That seems to be the norm right now. Mama is loving being so well-rested. There have been a few nights here and there when she’ll wake up twice, at different times, or we have difficulty getting her to bed for the night (she sleeps in a bassinet in our room). I’m sure we’ll have many more wakeful evenings and sleepless nights, but right now I am so thankful and counting my blessings!

And do we love her little gold leaf crown I purchased from Willow Crowns? Greg says she looks like Julius Caesar, but I happen to think she looks like a tiny little goddess.

She’s such a cutie! And I think it’s so cool Caroline and Owen were born on the same day. Another blog friend of mine also had her baby boy on August 17th. Popular day for blogger births. 🙂 Owen loves to be swaddled in those Summer SwaddleMe swaddle blankets too.
