I’ve got to say, Snapchat, is officially my new favorite social media platform. I was really hesitant to join, but now that I’ve been on it for more than 6 months, I’m obsessed. Snapchat is perfect for me. I need a place on the internet to be weird, and it’s totally that outlet for me. I can be a ham and a hot mess express and it’s perfectly acceptable!
I love Snapchat is because it’s unfiltered, real, unstaged, and candid. But the number one reason why I love it is because I have been able to build a community of people who are actively engaged and interested in my crazy-ness and the products that I share. Snapchat is so easy to use, too. Take a video or photo and post it to your story. That’s it. Go crazy with filters/lenses if you’re feeling fancy. There are no “rules”! You do you, and the people who love you will watch!
Don’t get me wrong – I love Instagram, but Snapchat is refreshing. I have put a lot of thought and elbow grease into Instagram, and while it’s paying off, it’s nice to have a place to go that’s just fun. It feels like there’s less pressure and less to scroll through.
I really hope that Snapchat stays this way – simple, easy, and with no way to upload highly edited videos and photos from your DSLR to post to your story. (Full transparency here: 90% of my Instagram is photos/videos shot on my DSLR. Much less work on Snapchat, yo!)
But let’s get back to the “actively engaged community” thing for a bit. That’s what we want as bloggers, right? Every other social media platform has some sort of algorithm and there’s no way to reach everyone at any given moment. You can with Snapchat! (That is, if they are viewing your story. So be fun, interesting, and engaging.)
You can be intentional with Snapchat. I know I certainly am. I am, by no means, a Snapchat expert, but I’ve noticed the more I weave my blog and make Snapchat a cool place for an exclusive community, the more engaged my people are. Some days I’m better at it than others. I try and talk about products I am loving, behind the scenes blogger stuff, funny things with my kids, and oh yeah…. I’m CRAZY. I was worried at first people would be reeeeeeal put off about how much personality I have, but my thought is, if you can’t handle it, I probably don’t want you at my party. No offense!
So how to I get my people to my Snapchat? Oddly enough, a lot come from Instagram. A few ways I promote it are I mention an exclusive thing going on over on Snapchat, or I’ll make non followers feel “left out” by saying things like “if you hang out with me on Snapchat, you probably know…” Usually saying stuff like “Come see what we did today!” doesn’t really bring many people over. Do people care that I took my kids to school? Maybe, maybe not. But do they want to see something that’s exclusive content on Snapchat? Definitely.
I’ve noticed some cool things lately. People are screenshotting products I talk about, chatting back to ask questions, or sending snaps. The views on my snaps are dramatically increasing and I’m getting feedback from blog posts and videos. People are engaging with the content on my blog!
So, for me, Snapchat is my most actively engaged community right now. I’m not saying it brings me the most pageviews (how do I even measure that?), but it’s where people care the most and return back to my blog the most. And I love it.
And just in case you aren’t a part of the Meg O. Crazy Party, I’ve compiled a video of some of my favorite recent snaps to compel you to come hang out with me over there.
Are you on Snapchat? What’s your favorite part about it?
