Living on the Texas Gulf Coast, beach trips are always a big part of summer. Something about sitting on the windy shoreline makes the heat more bearable and actually pleasant. I live about 30 minutes from Galveston – it’s hard to say no to a morning of sun and sand. I know you’re probably thinking that beach trip with kids sounds like the last thing you want to do right now, but I promise you they are fun.

I’m definitely not a pro, but I think there are a few tips for the beach that will help you have a successful day with your kids! Let’s talk more about beach essentials for a toddler, what to bring to the beach with kids, and tips for a successful day.

Sunscreen before you hit the road – If you live in Texas, you know it’s just so miserable outside during summer. Putting on sunscreen in the hot and sticky air is not fun. Also, the kids can just jump out of the car and start playing when you arrive.

Waterproof shoes are your best friend – Put your kids and yourself in crocs, natives shoes, swim shoes, or anything that can get wet and sandy. Sometimes flip flops aren’t good. I like to be able to just hose everything off when I get home.

Go on the early side on a weekday – 9:00-10:00 am is a perfect time for us to arrive, before the worst heat of the day. The beach isn’t crowded, especially during the week. You’ll also see more families there.

Don’t try to stay all day, or take breaks – My kids can’t handle long amounts of time out in the sun, so we really only like to stay a max of 2 hours. If you’re making your beach trip an all day event, take breaks. Go have lunch somewhere fun and then go back. Get out of the sun and do something else. Your skin will also thank you for that.

Find a pocket park – Pocket parks are the way to go because you can either drive your car on the beach and park right there, or they have a great facility with showers and bathrooms. There is an entrance fee to get into a pocket park (and you can only pay in cash), but it’s totally worth it – especially if you have kids in tow.

Get a beach parking pass if you’re local – If you’ll be visiting the beach more than 5 times in a summer, a beach parking pass is the way to go. In Galveston, you can get one for $50 for the entire year and you can park at any beach.

What to pack for a beach day with kids

  • Towels
  • Change of clothes for yourself and kids
  • Extra sunscreen
  • Bug spray (sometimes the mosquitoes are awful in Texas!)
  • Sunglasses
  • Hats
  • Cooler with ice – bring one that you can wheel and use it as a catch all for snacks and drinks
  • Grocery/plastic bags to collect trash and hold wet swimsuits
  • Collapsable wagon (if you will have to walk out a ways to the beach)
  • bottled water/drinks
  • Gallon jug of water – to rinse off feet and toys before leaving, if need be
  • Baby wipes
  • Swim diapers/extra diapers
  • Beach toys
  • Folding chairs
  • Umbrella or beach tent
  • Books/activities for the car trip there and back
  • Most importantly, heat-proof snacks for the kids

I have to elaborate on the snacks because my kids act like they will not survive unless they have some available to them at all times. Pack snacks that are easy to eat in the sun and do not melt. You may be dealing with sandy and sticky hands.

Apple sauce pouches are the perfect beach snack for kids, and we love the ones from Tree Top. They’re a no-mess snack made with 100% USA apples, contain nothing artificial and no high fructose corn syrup. The pouches are BPA-free and have a spill-proof packaging which is perfect for messy kids.
