If there’s one thing about Texans, it’s that they’re extremely proud of being a Texan. I would know it, I’m totally one of them. I was born and raised here, and now I’m raising my kids here. I’m Texan to the core, even if I’m married to a New Englander.
Some of the things that come to mind when I think about being a Texan or a Houstonian include…
- Tex Mex
- Barbecue
- The Houston Rodeo
- How it takes 12 hours to drive from one end of the state to another
- Beyonce
- JJ Watt
- Willie Nelson
- No state income tax
- Bluebonnets
- Queso
- Kolaches
- How the state flag is everywhere
- Bluebonnets
- The humidity in Houston
- The Alamo
- “Don’t Mess with Texas”
- 75 degrees on Christmas morning (that definitely happened last Christmas)
But some of the best things about Texas are:
Living near the coast. Just 15 minutes from me is the bay, and 30 minutes is the coast. Living near the coast has always been a part of my life, even when I went off to college in Corpus Christi. It’s really odd to think about being landlocked.
NASA. Of course we cannot forget about NASA and Space Center Houston. I pass by it every single day when I drop the girls off at school, and I often forget about how amazing the space program really is. It wasn’t uncommon to know astronauts growing up, and as an adult I have taught astronauts’ kids!
Texas spring water. There’s something about fresh, local spring water that is even more refreshing in the Texas summer heat. Ozarka Brand® 100% Spring Water is made in Texas, for Texans and its lucky neighboring states. While other waters may want to travel the world, Ozarka is the water for Texas. Keeping it gives the brand the opportunity to engage with a community we so deeply love. You can even visit the springs, and there’s one close to Houston! I know I am definitely putting that on the ol’ Texas bucket list.
The people who live here. The real pride in being a Texan is the people who live here. A few weeks ago, our city experienced catastrophic flooding and parts of the city are still having to rebuild and repair. Our part of town did not get hit very badly, but it breaks my heart to see so many people who lost everything and the struggle that is still happening north of us.
In all of this devastation, it is amazing to see the city band together and help victims. There are a lot of sad stories, but there are also stories that bring hope and compassion. For me, that’s the best thing about Texas. Southern hospitality is definitely a thing, and being a Texan gives me a sense of pride.
Speaking of which, Ozarka® Brand Spring Water also holds special pride for Texas. Here’s a little about the brand and their mission.
Supporting local brands, especially those with Texas pride, is something I love to do. Ozarka wants to know what being a Texan means to you, so make sure to share your story on social media using the hashtag #OzarkaCountry.

My boyfriend is from the Houston area and also knew a lot of astronauts growing up. We went to the Space Center a couple years ago and he was pointing out the ones that he knew.

Texas really is pretty fabulous. Houston in particular! There is so much to do around here when you step out of your comfort zone. It’s easy to get stuck just doing things in your area, but Houston is so big!
