One thing worth mentioning is I am not mentioning any makeup sponges in this post, but if you’re looking for a good sponge – I highly recommend you check out my Best Beauty Blender Dupes blog post and shop for one there. I don’t think you need to spend the $20 on the actual beautyblender if you’re trying to save some money! I like a makeup sponge mostly for my concealer.
1. Flat Top buffing Brush
I enjoy using a flat top buffing brush for blending out my foundation. Sometimes I’ll use a sponge – it doesn’t really matter! It’s just your personal preference here. My top favorite foundation brush is the It Cosmetics Heavenly Luxe Flat Top Buffing Brush but it is pretty pricey. (I think it’s worth the splurge – it’s held up for years!) If you need an affordable option, I highly recommend the e.l.f. Cosmetics Ultimate Blending Brush.
2. multi-use Large Fluffy powder brush
I have absolutely loved the Real Techniques Blush Brush, but I rarely use it for blush. I honestly think the shape of it is too big for blush, and it makes a much better powder brush. You certainly can use it for blush, which makes this brush very multi-use!
3. multi-use medium size powder brush
I like a medium size powder brush to apply my bronzer or powders. I really love the e.l.f. Complexion Brush to apply my bronzer. It’s medium size helps me apply the bronzer in more precise areas. The difference between this one and the Real Techniques one is that the e.l.f. brush is smaller in size, which is great for things like bronzer, or if you want to apply a powder product to a smaller area of the face. It’s not a small brush by any means, but I hope you get what I’m saying here!
4. Blush Brush (MEDIUM Contour Brush)
The Sigma F40 is my absolute favorite blush brush of all time! It can also be used for contouring. See a pattern here? I’m continuing to recommend brushes that can be used for lots of different things, particularly the face brushes!
5. Highlight Brush (Small Face Blender Brush)
The Morphe M510 is my absolute favorite highlight brush! I love that it is a small brush that can precisely place the product exactly where you want it. You can also use it to set your under eye area with powder or to powder other small areas.
6. SMALL CONTOUR BRUSH
I just LOVE this small contour brush from Real Techniques. I guess I didn’t realize while filming that this brush comes in a little Real Techniques set – it’s been so long since I purchased the brush and I forgot (they also rebranded the look of the brushes, too). The set comes with a foundation brush, buffing brush and small detailer brush, so you could likely purchase this set and skip out on some of the other individual brushes.
7. Large Fluffy eyeshadow blending brush
Having a large fluffy eyeshadow brush like the Sigma E40 is an absolute staple in my collection! For an affordable option, try the Morphe M505. I start all of my eyeshadow looks with a brush like this – whether it is to lay down a powder to even out the eyelids, or to blend in a light neutral brown as my transition shade. I don’t think I can live without these brushes!
8. Medium Fluffy eyeshadow blending brush
If I had to pick only one eyeshadow brush to use for an entire makeup look, it’d be the Sigma E25 / Morphe M433 (affordable option). The medium size of the brush makes it easy to apply all tones of shades without it becoming a mess. I can even blend shadows onto the lower lash line with it. It blends everything out seamlessly!
9. Pencil Brush
Having a pencil brush on hand like the Sigma E30 / Morphe M431 (affordable option) is perfect to use for any detail work. Use it for the lower lash line, to precisely place a dark shadow in the crease, and to highlight the brow bone and inner corner. It’s a staple for me!
10. Small Synthetic Concealer Brush
A small synthetic concealer brush like the Sigma F70 / Morphe M421 (affordable option) is the most versatile brush in this bunch. You can use it to apply any cream/liquid product (concealer, corrector, eyeshadow primer, glitter glue, liquid glitter, etc.) and it’s also great for packing a metallic eyeshadow onto the lid. Spray a little bit of setting spray onto the brush, dip into the eyeshadow and apply. So many things you can do with this brush!
Bonus Individual Brushes worth checking out:
- Liner brush – for applying gel liner, great to use as a lip brush, and I even spot conceal with it
- Synthetic small buffing brush – Comes in this set (very affordable). Great for buffing out cream eyeshadows, cream contour, etc.
Best Makeup Brush Set on Amazon

I am really picky when it comes to brush sets. I feel like a lot of the sets don’t have everything I’d want or they have a bunch of brushes I won’t actually use (like a fan brush…. I hate fan brushes #sorrynotsorry). This 25-Piece Makeup Brush Set honestly has everything I want in a set. Every single one of the type of individual brushes I listed up there plus then some. If I had to pick one con from the set is I wish it had a smaller highlighting brush like the Morphe M510 but it’s not a deal breaker for me.
The amazon makeup brush set affordable, comes in different color schemes (I couldn’t resist the rose gold and white!), and high quality. I’ve washed them about 4 times and have used them for the last month and a half (I filmed the video at the end of May). Highly recommend this set!
I have probably overwhelmed you with all the makeup brushes but I hope this was helpful in the very least!
